Premium auto brands produced 249,025 SUV/crossover sales in the first-quarter of 2016, equal to 16.3% of the overall utility vehicle market between January and March.

In the first-quarter of 2015, premium auto brands owned 15% of the SUV/crossover market. But utility vehicle sales at top-ranked Lexus and its 11 cohorts jumped 19% in the first-quarter of 2016, double the rate of growth experienced by the overall utility vehicle market.

Lexus' four nameplates (GX, LX, NX, and RX) led the sector at this time last year and grew 11% to 41,926 sales in 2016's first three months, 6891 sales ahead of Mercedes-Benz (G-Class, GL-Class, GLA-Class, GLC-Class, GLE-Class). BMW's five-pronged SAV lineup's 28% jump to 29,871 sales positions the brand in third spot. Acura's RDX and MDX are jointly down 6%. Land Rover, ranked sixth, is only 168 sales out of fifth place.
